About Laura
Laura Helmer grew up as the oldest of five children on a family farm in Olivia, Minnesota, a community of 2,500 people. After graduating from Olivia High School, Laura attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul where she majored in Economics and Spanish.
Laura earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Management from the Carlson School at the University of Minnesota while at the same time working for an international human resources consulting firm. After a decade spent designing executive pay packages and salary structures, Laura left the workforce in 1997 for a new job as a full-time mom. She has lived in Chanhassen for the past 15 years with her husband, Bruce, and their 2 children.
Laura has also spent the last 12 years as a community volunteer including serving as founder and Chair of Parents in Partnership, the parent involvement group at her children’s school. She was on the leadership team of the Friends of the Chanhassen Library throughout the building of a new library – first serving as VP of Finance and, later, as President of this community nonprofit with a $30K annual operating budget. Most recently, Laura helped to found POWER – a group of women motivated to become politically and socially vocal and active in her community. She has been active in local politics and held key roles on state-level campaigns in both the 2002, 2004 and 2008 election cycles as well as being a candidate for the Minnesota Senate in 2006. |
